“Rock and Roll never dies” – Rome brings Eurovision back home
It was all joy in Rome when the news came through that a glam rock Italian group had nailed the first position in the ongoing Eurovision Song contest and that meant the next competition would be held in Italy, bringing the next year’s competition back to Italy, where Europe’s song contests began.
The Eurovision contest victory gave Italy, which is one of the countries badly hit by the ravaging and rampaging virus, a respite and relief and a cause to celebrate and have hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Congratulatory messages began trickling in from the Italian communities up from the Premiere’s office. The Italian band had the highest popular votes in an entertaining, and unbelievable gaudy, yearly song festival.
The contest saw France taking the first runner-up position with Switzerland settling for the third position.
What is Eurovision Song Contest?
The Eurovision Song contest is an international song competition organized every year by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The program features contestants from primarily European countries. Each participating country submits an original song which they perform on live television and radio. This is transmitted to national broadcasters through the EBU’s Eurovision and Euroradio networks.
The Eurovision Song Contest is based on the Sanremo Music Festival held in Italy since the 1951. The contest has been held annually since 1956, earning it the top spot as the longest-running annual international televised music show. And of course, it is one of the world’s longest running television program.
How is a winner selected?

The competing countries cast votes for the other countries’ songs to determine a winner. Thirty nine (39) countries took part in this year’s Eurovision song contest. The annual live extravaganza of multicultural display makes the Eurovision keenly followed and contested.
This year’s contest was won by an Italian group from Rome called Måneskin. Måneskin is a Danish word which means “Moonlight”. Indeed the light brightened on them as they shone under the moon light with spectacular music and show.

This year, the competition took place in Lisbon in Portugal. Portugal goes down the annals of history as the first time the competition has been held in the country.
A reported 37 countries faced off in two semi-finals at the Lisbon Arena to secure a spot in the grand finale.
Twenty(20) countries including Ukraine, Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, The Netherlands, Norway, Serbia, Slovenia, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Lithuania, Moldova, Sweden and Albania had made it through the stage but at the end of the day, Italy took a dive to the top leaving France and Switzerland to settle for the second and third place respectively.
