Akua Donkor, the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has died at Accra’s Ridge Hospital, though details about her passing have not been shared publicly.
A family member confirmed her death to Citi FM on Tuesday, October 29, stating that she passed away on Monday, October 28.
Akua Donkor was a well-known figure in Ghanaian politics, celebrated for her energetic advocacy for farmers and women’s rights.
As the Ghana Freedom Party’s founder, Akua Donkor became a notable public figure, often drawing attention for her bold advocacy for grassroots issues.
Despite financial limitations, she consistently pursued the presidency, setting herself apart with her determination.
She had previously contested in two elections and was slated as the third candidate on the 2024 presidential ballot. Her passing closes a unique chapter in Ghana’s political scene.
Akua Donkor’s presidential ambitions began when she was elected as Herman’s Assemblywoman. Her first attempt at the presidency came in 2012 as an independent candidate.

However, she was disqualified by the Electoral Commission for not meeting eligibility criteria. Although Akua Donkor disagreed, she chose not to pursue legal action, instead lending her support to Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
In 2016, she faced disqualification again after a fire destroyed the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region, in early January.
