Putin has released the names of so-called “unfriendly countries” to Russia and guess what, Taiwan’s name was mentioned
Beijing will be watching with quiet disdain as China treats Taiwan as a breakaway region that it has not ruled out to even use force to “re-unite” the little island with mainland China.
Moscow listed the entire EU members countries including several others in a hasty decision which came after Putin’s Russia claimed some countries had taken “unfriendly actions” against Russia as a result of the war on Ukraine.
But for Taiwan, the list wasn’t surprising. The list included Albania, Andorra, Australia, Great Britain, including Jersey, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Gibraltar, members of the European Union, Iceland, Canada, Liechtenstein, Micronesia, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, San Marino, North Macedonia, Singapore, United States, Taiwan, Ukraine, Montenegro, Switzerland and Japan.
The list which ridiculously considered Taiwan as a sovereign nation, much to the anger of his closest ally – China, followed a presidential decree on 5th March. This decree allowed not only the Russian government but companies and Russians to temporarily pay overseas creditors from the so-called “unfriendly countries” in roubles for any foreign currency debts.
Government has encouraged debtors to open a special rouble account with a Russian bank, transfer the rouble equivalent of the owed amount in foreign currency in order to make the such payments based on the central bank’s official exchange rate on day of payment.
This decree or transient order applied to payment of foreign debt that exceeded 10 million roubles ($76,000) a month.
The Kremlin’s unprovoked war on her neighbor has precipitated unprecedented outrage and economic sanctions from the international community, with the EU, UK, US, and their allies.
With more than 400 Ukrainian civilians killed and thousands maimed since Putin orchestrated this unwarranted and unprovoked war on Ukraine on February 24, the international community has voted to condemn the Russian aggression, with few abstentions, of course.
The UN has called for several ceasefire for humanitarian corridors to be opened in Ukrainian cities like Mariupol and others which have been breached by the Russians and reportedly, the Ukrainians, on several occasions.
According to the UN refugee agency, more than 1.7 million people have been displaced or have fled the conflict from Ukraine to neighboring countries like Poland, Estonia, Slovakia with some continuing as far to Germany, UK etc.
Vladimir Putin, the Russian brutal dictator has cracked on several Russians protesting against the war which has seen several thousands of Russians citizens incarcerated, independent journalism banned and a threat of imprisonment disseminators of so-called “fake news” about Russian soldiers and the war to a whopping 15 year jail term.
But Russia may not have realized that she just legitimized Taiwan as a sovereign nation which isn’t part of China as wrongly believed and propagated by Beijing.
Ironically, Russia herself has called on Ukraine, another sovereign nation to disarm and has claimed Ukraine was created by Russians and thus the country literally has no sovereignty but just the long arm extension of the Kremlin’s imperialist agenda.
We conclude by asking the all-important question – has Putin just exposed their long-standing belief that Taiwan is a sovereign nation as opposed by Beijing in an embarrassing gaffe that would definitely provoke the ire of Beijing?
