Mathematics, they say, is the language of the gods. It’s the language of Science. And some believe it’s the language of the Prophets for every mathematics equation formed is said to be discovered but not invented.

Truth be told,  Math is just a numerical  explanation of the workings of the invisible forces of the universe for man’s understanding. And none can invent the universe but only discover what has been hidden.

So it comes as no surprise when a former Mathematics tutor, Mr. Samuel Owusu, after years of teaching mathematics at Jacobu Senior High Technical School decided to pursue his long-cherished, childhood dream of doning the black uniform to help contribute to law and order in the country.

Mathematics and law enforcement are bedfellows

The modern applications of mathematics in law enforcement has been mind-blowing. 

In the United States, mathematicians work with the police to develop algorithms to enhance what they call predictive policing software.

This widely entails any data analytics tools which make use of historical data to enable them forecast future crime, potential offenders, and victims.

The technology  uses probability to help police departments make the best accurate predictions on where and when crimes are likely to occur. This puts officers in the right place at the right time.

Who is Samuel Owusu?

Mr. Samuel Owusu was the Head of Mathematics department at Jacobu Senior High Technical School. Among his colleagues, he’s affectionately dubbed Tuga. He joined the school as a graduate non-professional mathematics tutor but later earned a professional diploma in teaching to excel better in his career.

His reign as head of mathematics department saw the introduction of very efficient programs like free, compulsory weekly standardized test to assess all students in their math abilities, compulsory Arithmetic assessment for all first years and intermittent mathematics counseling for non-performing students.

This unsurprisingly saw several students developing passion for mathematics and ultimately snatching enviable grades in mathematics in the WASSCE.

Around May 2022, the astute mathematician would finally put his marker on his desk – never to take it again and step into the wild to fulfill his unadulterated passion for policing his motherland.

A change of tool from a calm, plastic marker to the aggressive, metallic AK-47 may seem unthinkable for the small minds but to the few enlightened, there couldn’t be a more better fit for the ever-changing atmosphere of crime and policing than the man of figures and formulas. 

Crimes are not only increasing but ever evolving too and this calls for those who would think outside the box to find new solutions to the new challenges. And who better to look up to than the mathematician?

The training and Examination included areas such as drills, shooting, physical training like  running and academic aptitude tests among others.

Trainees also answered questions on law and government, constitution, Law of Evidence, Law of procedure, criminal investigation and General police duty.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony in Accra, COP Fred Adu Anim, Director General (Human Resources) of Ghana Police Service admonished the graduands not to fall prey to the get-rich attitude of most police officers and maintain dignity and integrity.
