Do you know that AI agents are the next big thing in AI? There isn’t an exact definition of what they are. People can’t agree on what constitutes an AI agent. An AI agent is AI-powered software. It does jobs that a human customer service agent, HR person, or IT help desk employee might have done. It can involve any task. You ask it to do things, and it does them. It sometimes crosses multiple systems and goes beyond answering questions.
It appears straightforward, right? Yet, it is complicated by a lack of precision. Even among major tech companies, there is no agreement. Google views them as task-oriented helpers depending on the role. For instance, they provide coding assistance to developers, help marketers design a color scheme, and support IT professionals in identifying issues by analyzing log data.
For Asana, an agent functions like an extra team member, managing tasks like a dependable co-worker. Sierra, a startup founded by former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and Google veteran Clay Bavor, considers agents as tools for enhancing customer experience, assisting users in completing actions that surpass the capabilities of traditional chatbots to address more complex issues. This vague definition leads to uncertainty about their exact role. Nonetheless, regardless of their definition, agents aim to automate tasks with minimal human intervention.

Rudina Seseri, who founded and is the managing partner at Glasswing Ventures, sees the early stage of development as a reason for the lack of consensus. According to Seseri, “An ‘AI agent’ lacks a universal definition. The common viewpoint is that it’s an intelligent software system that understands its environment, reasons about it, makes decisions, and acts to achieve specific goals autonomously,”

She points out that multiple AI technologies are utilized in these systems. “These systems leverage various AI/ML techniques such as natural language processing, machine learning, and computer vision to operate in changing environments, either independently or in conjunction with other agents and human users,” she notes.

Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box, predicts that as AI advances, AI agents will handle more tasks for humans. He sees ongoing factors driving this progress. According to Levie, improvements in GPU performance, model efficiency, quality, and intelligence, alongside advancements in AI frameworks and infrastructure, will significantly enhance AI agents in both the short and long term. This optimistic view assumes growth in these areas, though it’s not assured. Conversely, MIT robotics pioneer Rodney Brooks cautions that AI faces tougher challenges than most technologies and may not progress as quickly as chip technology under Moore’s Law.
