What many Ghanaians have been yearning for has finally been realized – suspension of Alex Opoku Mensah for abusing a nurse at post at the Manhyia Government hospital.
Mr. Alex Opoku Mensah was the Ashanti National Service Scheme (NSS) Director. The former boss invaded the Manhyia hospital to verbally abuse the nurse because he claimed that the nurse had intimidated a house officer, her daughter at the same hospital.
A recorded audio of Mr. Alex Opoku Mensah’s rant at the hospital contained despicable and abusive words aimed at the nurse.
He called her, stupid, idiot, ugly and non-human among others.
The National Service Scheme and government were urged by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to sack Mr. Alex Opoku-Mensah with immediate effect else they would embark on strike.
The NSS released a statement that the decision of Mr. Alex Opoku-Mensah’s suspension was taken on Wednesday, November 30 at a crunch meeting of the NSS management.
The management’s statement had it that its “decision is to allow further investigation into the alleged verbal assault on a nurse in duty at Manhyia Government hospital in Kumasi.”
Committee set up to investigate the incident
A committee has concurrently been set up to investigate the incident and submit its findings to the NSS Management in a month’s time.
This committee comprises representatives from the National Service Scheme, the Public Services Commission, and the Ministry of Education.
Mr Opoku-Mensah is scheduled to appear before the Committee on Monday, December 5, 2022.
How did we get here?
It all happened when Mr. Alex Opoku-Mensah, the embattled former Ashanti NSS Regional Director, stormed the Manhyia Government hospital to face off with a nurse at post.
The former NSS Coordinator was caught on tape verbally abusing a nurse who he believed had intimidated his daughter, a house officer at the same Manhyia hospital.
His utterances were vile and filthy, to say the least. This drew the ire of many Ghanaians who took to social media to condemn the erratic and bad-mannered former boss.
Mr. Alex Opoku Mensah eventually took to his Facebook page to apologize to Ghanaians but most would have none of that and reiterated a call for him to step down as the Ashanti NSS Regional Director.
“I understand the disappointment and appreciate the inconvenience my action has caused the public as well as the Nursing Fraternity and Manhyia Hospital,” a statement on his Facebook wall reads.
GRNMA calls for his dismissal or Government risks pushing nurses to industrial action
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) released a message calling for his dismissal and threatened to strike if the director was not shown the exit within the next 72 hours.
A message by the Ashanti Regional Vice Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Philemon Adu Brempong, reiterated that they had given government a 72-hour ultimatum to dismiss the Ashanti NSS Regional Director else they would embark on an industrial action.
They believed the Ashanti NSS Regional Director wasn’t fit for the Director position he holds in the Public Service.
