It happens often in our society – a person of comparatively higher social standing abuses a subordinate wilfully and what happens? Nothing, for the most part.

How did we get here? The alleged cause.

The female medical doctor is Mr. Alex Opoku Mensah’s daughter. She is currently under housemanship at the Manhyia hospital.

Housemanship is a period of training in an approved hospital or institution by a practitioner who has completed basic medical or dental training in a university or recognized institution.

The doctor had allegedly misprescribed 120mg of diazepam to a baby at the children’s ward.

Diazepam is a drug used to treat a range of diseases such as anxiety, seizures, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, muscle spasms, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome among others. 

Common side effects include sleepiness and trouble with coordination.

Diazepam falls in the same category as tramadol, under a group of drugs called benzodiazepine. 

Tramadol is mostly abused by the youth. Taken with alcohol or marijuana, tramadol or diazepam can be very devastating such that it can set the abuser on the course of fatal death.

To administer diazepam at a ridiculously high amount to a baby could only mean the doctor was clueless or unfit for her job.

Given the fact that a high dose of the sedative could result in death, the assaulted nurse reportedly became alarmed after disclosing the alleged misprescription by the said doctor.

The doctor wasn’t at post at the time the nurse disclosed the the possible overdose. It’s reported that the nurse demanded the doctor report to duty to rectify the error.

FactAlive could not establish the authenticity of this allegation that 120mg of diazepam was administered to a baby by the house officer. Kindly treat it as it is – rumor!

Mr. Alex Opoku Mensah, Ashanti region National Service Scheme (NSS) Coordinator Director

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has set the records straight on what actually led to the altercation between the nurse and the father of the house officer.

Contrary to the rather infamous allegation that the house officer had misprescribed 120mg of diazepam to a baby, the GRNMA stated that the nurse had called the house officer to remove some prescribed drugs the hospital could not provide to a patient from the bill.

According to the Medical Superintendent at Manhyia hospital, Dr. Kamarudeen Korku Husein, the female house officer wasn’t working at the children’s ward but at the surgical ward so she couldn’t have administered any drug to a baby.

In most Ghanaian hospitals, prescriptions and charges are done electronically.  This implies that if a patient is prescribed a drug, the system automatically adds the drug and its costs to his/her bill whether the hospital has the said drug in stock to offer or not.

The nurse at post reportedly called the house officer to kindly report to work, log into the system with her digital details and either change or trash the drugs the hospital couldn’t provide for the patient. In other words, the nurse detected that the patient was paying for drugs that couldn’t be provided.

The nurse’s innocuous call however struck a bad cord in Mr. Opoku, who was in the company of his daughter at that moment. He believed the nurse was onto her daughter and such action, to him, elicited a preemptive verbal attack.

Mr. Alex Opoku invades the hospital premises

In the alleged audio, it can be gathered quickly that Mr. Alex Opoku Mensah had driven to Manhyia hospital premises with her ‘doctor daughter’ and was heard insulting the nurse vigorously.

He’s heard brazenly firing very filthy words at the nurse and threatening to use his so-called NSS Coordinator position to get her transferred from Manhyia hospital.

Below is an abridged translation of the altercation between Alex Opoku Mensah (AOM) and the nurse.

NURSE: I have every right to care if a patient has concerns.

GRNMA wants Mr. Alex Opoku Mensah sacked as Ashanti region NSS Coordinator

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has called for the immediate dismissal of Mr. Alex Opoku Mensah as the Ashanti NSS Coordinator because the group argues that he’s not fit for such public office.

In the audio, the Ashanti NSS Coordinator is heard flagrantly intimidating the nurse with his post and threatening to get her thrown out of Manhyia hospital if she dared.
