The Sudden Passing of a Royal Titan

In a somber turn of events, the Ashanti Kingdom has lost one of its most esteemed leaders. Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the revered Mamponghene, passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at the age of 86. His death, following a brief illness, has left the kingdom in a state of mourning and uncertainty.
A Legacy of Leadership
Born Oswald Saith Gyimah-Kessie on December 31, 1939, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was a man of remarkable intellect and dedication. Educated at Prempeh College and the University of Ghana, he earned a BA in economics, political science, and modern history. His career path led him to serve as the Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and as a practicing lawyer. In 1996, he was enstooled as Mamponghene, succeeding his uncle, Nana Atakora Amaniampong II.
For 26 years, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II led the Mampong Traditional Area with wisdom and grace. His reign was marked by peace and stability, a rare feat in the often tumultuous realm of chieftaincy. Notably, under his leadership, the area experienced no chieftaincy disputes or litigations, a testament to his diplomatic prowess and commitment to unity.
The Final Days

His passing was officially communicated to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in accordance with Ashanti customs. The Mampong Traditional Council and the Bretuo family ensured that all traditional rites were observed before making the announcement public. The Queenmother of Mampong, Nana Agyakoma Difie II, led the delegation to Manhyia Palace to convey the news.
As per tradition, the people of Mampong have donned black and red attire to signify their mourning. The usual vibrant celebrations have been replaced with solemn dirges as preparations for the final funeral rites commence. The community stands united in grief, awaiting further announcements regarding the funeral arrangements and the succession process.
The Silver Stool Awaits

Mamponghemaa, Nana Agyakoma Difie II
With the passing of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Silver Stool of Mampong is now vacant. This throne, second in importance only to the Golden Stool of the Ashanti Kingdom, holds immense cultural and spiritual significance. The question on everyone’s lips is: Who will ascend the Silver Stool?
The succession process is steeped in tradition and protocol. The Bretuo family, to which Daasebre Osei Bonsu II belonged, will play a pivotal role in selecting a successor. However, the path to the throne is not without its challenges. Historical records indicate that the Bretuo family has faced internal disputes and rivalries, which could complicate the selection process.
Moreover, the political landscape adds another layer of complexity. Recent tensions between the Mamponghene and certain political factions have raised questions about the influence of external forces on the succession process. The late Mamponghene had recently issued a stern warning to members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over alleged attempts to sow division within the community.
The Unfolding Drama
As the Ashanti Kingdom grapples with the loss of a revered leader, all eyes are now on Mampong. The coming days will be crucial as the Bretuo family convenes to deliberate on the next occupant of the Silver Stool. Will tradition prevail, or will modern influences disrupt the age-old customs?
The people of Mampong await with bated breath, hopeful that the next Mamponghene will continue the legacy of peace and prosperity established by Daasebre Osei Bonsu II. However, the path ahead remains uncertain, and the kingdom stands at a crossroads, poised for a new chapter in its storied history.
