Science and Mathematics teachers participating in SEIP stranded at hotels
Science and Mathematics teachers in the country participating in a program called the Secondary Education improvement Program (SEIP) as a way of improving on their methodology and pedagogy in their profession have complained bitterly about the hardships meted out to them.
Science and Mathematics teachers from Ashanti, Western North, Central and Western regions, categorized as zone 1 and 2, were asked to converge at Splendor Hotel in Kumasi today, 5th July 2021, at 12:00 noon.
Although teachers reported early at the scheduled 12:00 noon, some were stranded and could not find a place to lay their head.
Some Science teachers lamented bitterly that they were initially told to lodge at Forestry lodge only to be transferred to Timber and Woods hotel where they were denied rooms. Others reported similar instances at Hasta hotel where the receptionist turned them away with those granted a place to sleep having no water to bathe.
The SEIP is reportedly funded by World Bank and teachers believe the leaders at Ghana Education Service have deliberately underfunded the program despite the huge fund placed at their disposable.
Some teachers lamented bitterly that they were conveyed in a school bus by Onwe Senior High school like sardines. More than 100 teachers were cramped in a 50-60 seater bus from Splendor Hotel, their convergent point, to their respective “hotels”.
The program is expected to teach the teachers new ways to make Science and Mathematics practical and enjoyable to the student but most of the teachers believe the workshop has been milked by some elements in the GES and called on World Bank and funders to launch independent investigation. The teachers are expected to spend a three day intensive training after which they will be examined through demonstration and teaching.
