Channel Updates Are Stable
While most features we identify are in various stages of development or beta testing, users of the consumer-facing version from the Play Store can expect a few new additions this month. Firstly, WhatsApp is transitioning from its dark green color scheme to a lighter one. Although we observed this in testing last month, the updated UI design—with a prominent search bar, a squarish floating action button, and a bottom navigation bar featuring four equally spaced tabs—is now being rolled out.
This design incorporates a lighter color scheme along with new shapes in the default chat background, known as doodle. Though there are several smaller updates, they all aim to modernize the app interface while maintaining its simplicity.
Moreover, the Play Store updates have extended the duration limit on voice notes and voice messages shared as status updates. This enhancement allows users to convey their message in fewer consecutive messages, reaching a broader audience. Regarding limitations, users of the Play Store-delivered stable version will also observe an increase in the number of messages they can pin per chat, now allowing up to three messages compared to the previous limit of one per chat. However, it’s essential to recognize that pinned messages are temporary. For long-term reference, consider star-marking messages, as WhatsApp does not impose a limit on the number of starred messages per chat.
In another development, thumbnail previews for status updates began rolling out to numerous testers this month. This move might signal Meta developers’ intention to establish them as the primary feature of the Status tab. These previews are taller and rectangular, showcasing the content posted as an update, aiming to replace the traditional circular profile picture preview, reminiscent of Snapchat.
