Most people think one email equals one address. It makes sense—one phone number, one home address—but your Gmail account can actually create unlimited variations that fool services and spammers alike.
One simple method is called “plus addressing.” After the part before the @, add a plus (+) and any word you like.
For example, if your Gmail is jo**@gm***.com, you could use ne*****@gm***.com“>john+ne*****@gm***.com or hu**@gm***.com“>john+hu**@gm***.com. To the service, it looks like a unique email, but all messages still arrive in your main inbox. This works on any Gmail address, even outside gmail.com.
Plus addressing is useful for spotting spam. Assign a unique plus address to each service you sign up for—like fa******@gm***.com“>john+fa******@gm***.com for Facebook or hu**@gm***.com“>john+hu**@gm***.com for Hulu. If spam arrives at that alias, you know exactly where it leaked.
It’s also perfect for temporary accounts or free trials. Instead of making a new Gmail each time, add a plus address for the trial, such as tr****@gm***.com“>john+tr****@gm***.com or ro******@gm***.com“>john+ro******@gm***.com. (Credit card limits may still be a restriction.)
Periods can create variations too. Try j.***@gm***.com, jo***@gm***.com, j.*****@gm***.com—any arrangement works.
If a service doesn’t accept plus addresses, swap “gmail” with “googlemail.” For example, jo**@go********.com will still deliver to your main inbox while appearing as a new address to the service.
For even stronger privacy, consider “Hide My Email” services like DuckDuckGo or Apple. These burner addresses forward mail to your main Gmail without revealing your actual email. Plus addressing still shows your main username to the service, but burner accounts keep it completely hidden.
