A 19-year-old student in China drew wide attention after exam supervisors repeatedly accused her of wearing cosmetics, only for her to confirm her look was completely natural.
According to Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post, Hou Xinyi from the Communication University of China applied for a Beijing art exam in January last year.
Although she appeared without any products on her face, her striking features made examiners suspicious. She was told to “wipe off makeup” five separate times, and one invigilator even tugged at her eyelashes to check if they were real.
Hou still delivered top results, taking first place in the Beijing Broadcasting and Hosting Art Exam with 274 points and securing 17th nationwide in the CUC professional test with 83.07 points.
CUC, a leading school for media and broadcasting talent in China, has trained many well-known presenters. On September 13, Hou posted a photo from the school’s opening ceremony with a message of love for her university. She currently has more than 400,000 followers on Douyin.

Whispers about Hou undergoing cosmetic procedures spread quickly online. To clear the air, she updated her profile with a note saying she had never gone under the knife, writing, “I want to be a well-made cake. No surgery. Truly none. Please stop asking.” Older images of her also highlight her natural features—defined eyelids, a slim face, and a high nose bridge.
Public reactions were mixed. Some defended her, saying critics were simply envious and would not look as striking even with surgery. Others praised her looks outright, insisting her charm remained untouched by rumors.
Hou also stated she has no intention of pursuing acting or joining the entertainment world. She reflected that the gossip, once distressing, has now shaped her resilience, becoming a lasting part of her voice and story.
