Ghana Police bust 21 LGBTQI+ members secretly holding “unlawful” meeting in Volta Region

The detainees consisted of 16 women and five men. They gathered to advocate LGBTQI+ activities with titles including “Coming out” and “All about Trans”. The detainees will be arraigned before court on June 4th.

Ghana police busted 21 people suspected to be LGBTQI+ members  on Friday holding unlawful meeting in Ho, Volta region.

The 21 suspects were accused of unlawful assembly. Members of the LGBTQI+ face an ongoing persecution in Ghana and West Africa as a whole. Most Africans see the LGBTQI+ as unnatural, immoral and against their culture and customs.

The LGBTQI+ offices in Ghana were forced to close lately under public pressure.

What were they doing?

While it is tempting to think that the suspected shooter massacred his girlfriend and people around her as a result of misunderstanding and possible break-up, police say they are still investigating the killer’s motive.

Rights organization, Rightify Ghana, has called for their immediate release adding that they had met to deliberate on how to document and report violations on their human rights.
